The Mount Kenya and Aberdare National Parks are located in the highest parts of Kenya.
Lots of rainfall make this volcanic massif an important water reservoir. On its fertile slopes below 2000 metres, plantations of tea, coffee, wheat and maize are grown.
Higher up, tropical forest overruns the slopes. At 4000 metres the glaciers begin. Mount Kenya’s summit is at 5199 metres, it is the second highest peak in Africa.
The combination of altitude and equatorial temperatures has given this area a unique array of fauna. The Mount Kenya National Park also has a rich variety of birdlife.
Many species of animals are common in both parks, with the forest level the most densely populated.
Elephants, buffalo and monkeys can be found there but also, more rarely, leopards and black rhinos.
